Railway Spitting, Littering Fine Doubled To ₹1,000 Under New 2026 Rules
The Centre has increased the maximum penalty for spitting, littering and creating unhygienic conditions on railway premises to ₹1,000 from ₹500. The Railway Premises Amendment Rules, 2026 aim to improve cleanliness at stations. Passenger groups said stricter fines may help, but effective enforcement, awareness and better facilities will be needed for lasting behavioural change among commuters.
