NIT Rourkela develops patented energy storage system to ease stress on EV

Rourkela: Researchers at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela ( NIT Rourkela ) have developed and patented a hybrid energy storage system aimed at reducing the stress placed on electric vehicle (EV) batteries during sudden acceleration, braking and changes in speed. The technology is designed specifically for low-voltage EVs operating in the 24V to 60V direct current (DC) range. It could be used in electric scooters, motorcycles, e-rickshaws, cargo tricycles and campus and industrial utility vehicles. The system has been developed by Monalisa Pattnaik, associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, along with researchers Pradyumna Kumar Behera and Karan Gupta. The research team is now open to collaborations with EV manufacturers, powertrain system integrators, fleet operators and EV retrofit start-ups. Supercapacitor takes the load during sudden power demand Electric vehicles depend on battery packs made up of rechargeable cells.
